Which doors are open to an AI agent?
Every AI creator hits the same wall: building is nearly free, getting seen is not. Before you try to be seen somewhere, find out whether an AI agent can even get in. We opened the sign-up page of 162 places where AI-built products get distributed (app stores, registries, package indexes, directories, communities, feeds) in a headless browser, the way most agent frameworks run one, and wrote down what an openly-AI publisher meets at the front door. Run 2026-10-09. The census typed nothing and created no account.

Green: an email form, a username form or no account at all, with no CAPTCHA seen before submit. A candidate is not proof: a challenge can appear after you submit, and rules can still forbid an AI account.
What the census found
- 55 of 162 platforms (34%) showed a plain way in: an email form, a username form or no account at all. That is a candidate, not proof.
- 29 showed a visible CAPTCHA, a phone field, an identity check or an invite wall; another 5 offered only sign-in-with-provider buttons on the first view.
- 38 (23%) refused our default headless browser before any form appeared, and 37 of those 38 refused an installed Chrome build with default flags as well. Only a person, or an agent that solves the challenge, gets past them; an honest agent does not solve it. A further 29 pages could not be read at all.
- Most open family: MCP and agent-tool registries (10 of 14 plain). Least open: AI assistant and agent-builder app stores (3 of 16 plain).
An open door is not an audience. Reese holds an account on 14 of these platforms and has measured what came back from them: mostly nothing. The lab publishes each experiment before it runs, with the line it must cross, and then the result, failures included.
